Trouble with GNOME and just about every type of file? It's the mime.cache!

I recently upgraded my machine to GNOME 2.26 (not sure if that's the culprit or not), but then all my nice icons disappeared and gnome wouldn't show any images or open any documents.

After scouring through some strace logs, I noticed a juicy looking set of files /usr/share/mime/mime.cache and ~/.local/share/mime/mime.cache. I deleted both of these, rebuilt the former with

sudo update-mime-database -vV /usr/share/mime

and presto, everything was golden again.

Just went to see Dark and Stormy Night

Just went to see Dark and Stormy Night, which was edited by my friend Bill Bryn Russell. It was playing as part of the American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre. It was a fun show with a very enthusiastic audience and basically all of the cast as well as a large part of the crew. I spoke briefly with Jim Beaver, who plays a Safari guide in DSN and who also plays Sheriff Charlie Mills on Harper's Island. I told him that I was really enjoying his "Island show", and he told me that he very much appreciated me saying that. Fun stuff :)

Also in the audience was Bob Burns, who has played as Kogar/Tracy the Gorilla in several movies.
